RLM Executive Mayor blesses launch of Yarona Bus

RUSTENBURG: The Rustenburg Local Municipality’s Executive Mayor presided over a blessing ceremony for the start of the Yarona Bus’s operations on Friday, August 5, 2022. The Municipal Manager, TNF representatives, MMCs, and the Yarona Rustenburg Team were there, together with the Speaker of Council, Councilors from the relevant Wards, and other government representatives. The event was merely a celebration of the project’s largest achievement to date—the beginning and blessing of operations by Rustenburg’s most important citizen.

The Executive Mayor stressed the significance of blessing the buses before they are put into service in her statement. “As I think back to where this project first started, I find it hard to believe that after a drawn-out process, we can finally look forward and give passengers what they deserve. As we advance with our goal of empowering the communities, we serve to take advantage of the endless growth opportunities that come with a safe, dependable, reasonably priced, and comfortable public transportation system, the RLM family is setting out on an exciting journey. As we go into the next stage of our journey, getting the buses on the road for everyone to use, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all Rustenburg residents for their continuous support and civility during our planning process, said the Executive Mayor, Cllr Sheila Mabale-Huma.

The Yarona Bus system has started operating as of 1 August 2022 and slowly the bus can be seen picking up passengers in and around the CBD, to Tlhabane and back. Given that it would be taking passengers to their destinations for just R10 a trip, the bus is expected to draw a sizable number of passengers in the Rustenburg region. “With the fuel cost so high, it can only be expected that Yarona Bus will provide the city with a solution. We take pride in our work ethic and look forward to making Rustenburg the best city imaginable,” says Cllr. Mabale-Huma.

Tickets for the Yarona Bus can be purchased every day from 07:30 to 12:30 at Foro Spar in Tlhabane and from 13:00 to 17:00 at the Magistrate’s Station. Commuters can purchase the Yarona Smart Card for R50 as part of an introductory offer, register it with their ID and cellphone number, and top it up to be eligible for five trips free of charge. To finish Phase 1A, the Tlhabane West, Geelhoutpark, and Rustenburg North routes will be the next to open. As the fleet grows, other phases will be added.
